Ion-sensitive field-effect transistors, also known as ISFETs, are field-effect transistors used to measure the concentration of ions in a solution. When the ion concentration (for example, H+, see pH value) changes, the current flowing through the transistor also changes accordingly. Here, the solution is used as the grid. The voltage between the substrate and the oxide surface is generated by the ion layer. It has the same basic structure as MOSFET and is a special type of MOSFET (Metal Oxide Semiconductor Field Effect Transistor), but the metal gate is replaced by an ion-sensitive membrane, electrolyte solution and reference electrode. ISFET was invented in 1970 and was the first biosensor FET (BioFET).
