Superabsorbent polymers (SAP for short, also called superabsorbent resins) are a new type of functional polymer material that can absorb and retain liquids that are much larger than their own mass. Water-absorbing polymers are hydrogels that can absorb solutions through hydrogen bonds connected to water molecules. Therefore, the water absorption capacity of super absorbent polymers is affected by the ion concentration of the solution. In deionized water and distilled water, the super absorbent polymer can absorb 500 times its own weight (30-60 times its own volume), but if it is placed in 0.9% salt water, the absorption capacity will drop to 50 times its own weight. The presence of valence cations in the solution will hinder the ability of polymers to form valence bonds with water molecules.
