According to the new research report titled “Military Rugged Display Market Forecast to 2027 – COVID-19 Impact and Global Analysis,” published by The Insight Partners, the market is expected to reach US$ 2,647.30 million by 2027, registering a CAGR of 7.4% during 2020–2027, the forecast period considered in the report. The scope of study highlights the factors contributing to the market growth. It also includes estimation and forecast of the revenues, and market size analysis along with spotting significant market players with their key developments.

North America Accounted for Highest Market Share in 2019

The US and Canada are among the key North American countries that invest substantial amounts in their military forces. The defense departments of these countries consistently adopt various advanced technologies to provide soldiers mission-ready technologies. As per the facts stated by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), in 2019, the military spending by the US grew by 5.3% from previous year to reach a total of US$ 732 billion, which accounted for 38% of the global military spending. The rising military expenditure positively influences the adoption of various advanced technologies, including military rugged displays. According to the global firepower index 2020, the region has the largest strength of ~13,264 aircraft, ~6,289 tanks and ~39,253 armored vehicles in the land force, as well as ~20 aircraft carriers and ~66 submarines in naval force. This figure also highlights the high demand for military rugged devices as the abovementioned vehicles traverse through rough terrains.

The US and Canada comprises a large number of companies such as Aydin Displays and Curtiss-Wright Corp, which extensively focus on research and development to upgrade the electronics that are currently being used in the military sector. According to an analysis published by the researchers from the Air Force Research Laboratory in March 2019, a few of the US-based companies are engaged in designing organic light emitting-diode (OLED) micro-displays to upgrade presently fielded electronics in the US military. The next-gen OLED technology is likely to replace LCD in the near future in various applications such as mobile micro-displays, small displays for wearable electronics, and SWaP.
A few of the significant market strategies adopted by the military rugged display companies are:

• In May 2020, the defense solutions division of Curtiss-Wright Corp., a US-based product manufacturer and service provider of various mission-critical components used in the military and commercial applications, announced a launch SVDU-M 7-inch rugged mission display for installed military and civil aircraft and land vehicles. The display provides LED backlighting for optimized daylight viewing and dual-mode LED backlighting to aid MIL-STD-3009 NVIS B night-vision-goggle (NVG) use.

• In March 2018, the Aydin Displays brand of Sparton Corporation received a contract of US$ 13 million to provide ruggedized ~600 flat panel displays to BAE Systems over a two-and-a-half-year period for a program supporting the navy forces.

• In October 2017, the US Army awarded a contract worth US$ 88 million to General Micro Systems Inc. to install the robust, rugged server, and display systems for operating the multifunction video display (MVD) software in Type II medium mine protection vehicles (MMPV). The contract has offered the US Army with an ultra-small and robust server using the high-performing Intel Xeon E5 processors that Apple distributed in its “Pro” products.

The COVID-19 outbreak in North American countries, especially in the US and Canada, is leading to the imposition of lockdown measures. The measures are adversely affecting various business activities in these countries. Owing to the shutdown of the manufacturing companies involved in the designing of various devices for military applications, military rugged display providers are facing revenue losses and slow growth, which would continue in the next few quarters. However, the market is expected to grow gradually from 2021 onward.

Impact of COVID-19 Pandemic on Military Rugged Display Market

The recent COVID-19 pandemic crisis is adversely affecting the world and is continuing to shatter several countries. Until the outbreak, the defense industry was experiencing substantial growth in terms of production and services; however, the crisis is disrupting the supply chain and manufacturing of defense products equipment.

The defense manufacturing industry is heavily dependent on manual labor, and it is experiencing a lack of labors in respective manufacturing facilities due to the lockdown regulations in many countries across the world. Major defense spenders allocate close to or over 2% of their GDP, a significant amount, to defense. However, several governments are deprioritizing defense spending owing to the emergence of pandemic. Also, governments of many countries are investing in the activities that may help control the spread of the virus. This factor is restricting the production of various defense equipment, thereby hindering the growth of military rugged display market.

Key findings of study:

The defense aircraft manufacturers across the world are focusing heavily on the manufacturing and marketing of advanced aircraft for the military forces. Military forces are urging aircraft OEMs to increase the internal and external ruggedness of the aircraft models to support the demand for smooth aircraft operations under harsh environments. To meet these requirements, the airframers are seeking advanced solutions such as lightweight, durable, and rugged materials for exterior and interior applications, including avionics displays. The adoption of rugged displays for military avionics is increasing, which propels the growth of the military rugged display market.

The growing production of military aircraft fleet and avionics displays accelerates the demand for advanced technology screens. The military aircraft fleet such as fighters, transporters or freighters, tankers, and helicopters traverses through various harsh environments that sometimes leads to disruption of various conventional or non-rugged displays, which causes interruption in combat operations. Therefore, the aircraft manufacturers and air forces are seeking rugged displays that enable several rugged display manufacturers to design and develop rugged avionics displays. The increase in the manufacturing of military aircraft model shows the growth in procurement of rugged military displays for avionics. Also, the military aircraft production is anticipated to grow in the forthcoming years, which is foreseen to drive the demand for rugged displays, thereby catalyzing the military rugged display market.
